*Support What We Do at The Katz-Moses Store* https://lddy.no/stih
On this Tool Review Tuesday we are comparing the Narex Richter Chisels vs the Stanley 750s. As always, I have never and will never take money for paid reviews. These are tools I have purchased and used extensively. If you can think of a better name than Tuesday Tool Reviews (Not Tool Duel @mattestlea already came up with the G.O.A.T.) PLEASE let me know down in the comments. Let me know what you’d like to see next. Thanks for watching! Please like, comment and subscribe. Cheers!

I just bought a set of 5 Richters. I’ve known of Narex tools for quite a few years and their engineering history in the Czech Republic but I’ve never owned any. Delivery is due tomorrow and I’m really looking forward to seeing them up close because every review I’ve seen is singing their praises.
I just replaced a set Stanley chisels for Narex Richter chisels because of the problem you described about the Stanley’s I would take a chisel off of the wall and the chisel would fall off the handle and on to the cement floor. Which required sharping again. Thanks for the review!
Seriously, you can’t compare Stanley to anything but home depot brands 🤦🏻♂️😂
I suggest people actually invest in Japanese Chisels, they will not be beaten by anyone!!
I bought the Richter 1 1/2" to replace an old Sandvik that was really handy, once in awhile. Flattened the back–which was a bit of work–and sharpened it, and immediately ordered the other six. James Wright also rates them very highly. Rob Cosman found a few flaws. I actually agree with all 3 of you. They aren’t perfect, but–especially for the price–they’re dang close. (I *like* the big honkin’ handles, but some might not.)
How many of those sizes are actually used?
Narex has a good range. The 8105 for jobbing carpentry. The 8116 which is very similar to the Richter but less of a polish but still narrow bevel edges. The Richter’s are about twice the price now
Awesome.
The Stanley handles are made from hornbeam.
Ladies and Gentlemen Are You Ready To Chisel Your Rumble? Lol
No japanese Chisels? I thought those were the holy grail of chisels.
looking at buying some narex chisels. but i saw something i am not familiar with. a set says bevel. and another set says extra bevel. do you know what extra bevel is?
I just got the Narex 5 in a box. Really pleased with the finish, quality. The one issue I had though was the 3/4 inch. Had to spend a lot of time flattening the back, really out of flat. The rest were all good.
nice review, the stanley handles are hornbeam fyi.
Fat tool, reviews tools 😂
How about Tool Duel Due (like 2) not sure how you spell it
I have two set of Narex chisels and the Rickart are very good.
If you make more than 3 of these types of videos. Maybe call it the Rival Bible : Book of Chisels- chapter 1 Narex vs Stanley
For those using a 25° honing guide, be aware the primary bevel on the Narex is 24° NOT 25.
Otherwise a great value for a well built tool.
Cheers,
Current Stanley 750 are crap. The filing is awful. The steel is soft. Only good for opening cans.
Narex Richter are excellent steel, but a massive bitch to flatten.
I am not a fan of Western chisel handles. I prefer the Japanese style handle.
0:36 just ask him if you can revive that show name. "Tool Duel with JKM" … Its like when a late night show gets a new host lol
Two Tool Duel, rolls right off the tongue 😛
Did you remove my last comment about your Johnson? I’m a chode lover what can I say?! Please don’t hate me.
I usually don’t tell students to buy the most/more expensive tool, but the Richter would make me recommend an exception. If the Richters are treated well , they should easily last a lifetime. The only issue that makes me go "Huh" is when you are doing heavy mortise work , there is more of a vibration/bounce back feeling in the handle. I have some no name chisels that get fairly abused , then I finish up with the Richters.
My set of Narex must have been a bad batch. I spent a on average 1.5 to 2 hours per chisel to get them 100% flat. They’re not perfect
I like the stanleys but their pants. The design is sxy though. On a budget, I’d go with the Narex ones or save up for the proper Lishielson ones.
I didn’t have a positive experience contacting NAREX in Czech Republic. I emailed them on their site on 2 occasions, asking for information, advice, where to buy etc. I never got a response from them. This experience soured me even though their product is supposed to be very good.
What about a Lie-Neilson versus Veritas chisel review?
🤜🏻⚡️🤛🏻
The Stanley chisels are Hornbeam handles .
Tools Time
Dual tools
I have an old set of Marples (pre Stanley, late 70’s ish) that are awesome. I bought my son a set of the Narex Richter’s, they are awesome. They seem to hold an edge better than the Marples.
Nice but fast speaking review! I am 80 and have badly damaged hearing! MILITARY GUNFIRE!
Put a magnetic strip up to hold the Stanley chisels with the handles up, so the handles won’t fall up, and the metal won’t detach from the magnet(s) until you pull the chisel off the wall. Just ordered a set of the 750’s. Can’t justify the Narex for what I do, clearly an investment worth making if it is something you use to make a living (or just if you can afford it, and want to) – just like I can’t justify a Saw Stop for my shop, though it would be awesome. Keep em comin JKM!
Prices have really changed since this video. The 7 pc Richter set is $100 more than the 8 pc Stanley set.
Late to the party, but how about, "Tool vs Tool"? Kind of a shout out to Mad magazine.
Fo shizzle ma Jizzle, this the best chizzle revizzle. 🙏
Have you actually tested the flatness of the chisel backs? I just bought a set and the backs are FAR from flat. I spoke with the local supplier who then checked his inventory of these chisels and found that all of them failed on flatness… and by not flat I mean a long way off being flat with hollows right up to the cutting edge.
Unfortunately, the Narex chisels are much more expensive now
I know this video is a year old, but I’m looking into getting a set of better chisels. I watched a video of Rob Cossman doing a comparison of the narex richter and the wood river ball and socket chisels. He had a complaint of the vibration of the narex due to how thin it is and a few other things that he didn’t like. I know it’s subjective, but have you encountered any problems with the narex? I would love to have a set of Lie Neilson chisels, but as a beginner, I can’t afford over $500 just for chisels. I know a lot of woodworker and creator’s have been doing a lot of reviews on the narex chisels lately, and so far Rob was the only one I’ve came across that had somewhat of a negative opinion. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
How does the richter compare to lie Nielsen/veritas? Really most concerned about which holds an edge longer.
2 tools duel sounds better…There you go
I am Chennai dalevery ok
I just spent 4 hours stone sharpening a set of new Stanley’s I inherited from my dad. I would happily pay the difference to start with a better product. Thanks for the review!
I’ve no doubt the Narex are high quality chisels. One issue I’d have with them being a hand tool woodworker is the durability of the edge. They are chrome-vanadium steel which has adequate but not superior edge retention. I’d hate to be stropping or re-honing so often it interrupts my work. For the average weekend woodworker, they might be fine They are relatively affordable. For my money, I’m a fan of the Lee Valley Veritas PM-V11 chisels, but they run around 2x the price of the Narex. I like the Lie Nielsen A2 steel bench chisels as well, but I bought mine when they are half the price they sell for now. It’s a benefit that the Narex chisel backs are relatively flat, but flattening the backs is a one and done deal for chisel prep. I bought one of the Stanley 750’s just for fun and I’m not a fan of the tall landings on them either.
The Stanley sweetheart handles are made from hornbeam.
I ordered the narex yesterday after poking around and felt guilty for the $$ and after watching this I feel better about it
